Travel documents

EU citizens whose country signed the Schengen agreement only need a valid ID card or passport when entering Italy. All citizens that do not belong to this group need to present their passport at the Italian border and, if necessary, also a visa.

Passport or identity card

EU citizens whose country signed the Schengen agreement only need a valid ID card or passport when entering Italy.
Schengen area: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Malta and Switzerland.
Due to agreements with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, citizens of these countries are treated as EU citizens and are therefore allowed to travel in the EU with just an ID card or passport.

*Children who do not possess an ID card or passport must be registered on their parents’ passport or on that of the guardian they are travelling with.

Visa
Tourists travelling from countries non-EU (for example Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, USA) do not need a tourist visa if they are staying in Italy for fewer than 90 days. In this case, a valid passport is sufficient (there are 28 non-EU countries whose citizens are allowed to stay in the European Union without a visa). All citizens not belonging to this category must have an entry visa indicating the duration and the destination of their stay. You may apply for a visa at the Italian consulate in your own country of residence, explaining the reason of your journey (visas are usually issued 90 days after their application). If upon arrival you elect not to stay in a tourist accommodation facility (e.g., hotel, etc), you have eight days to register presence at the local Police Headquarters. If you are staying in a hotel or any other tourist accommodation facility, the reception office will automatically register your arrival.
These requirements are subject to change so please contact the Italian Consulate or Embassy to verify their accuracy before leaving.

Documents for driving in Italy
Drivers licences issued by all EU countries are valid in the whole of the European Union area, therefore also in Italy. If you are in possession of a driver’s licence issued by a non-EU country then you must have an international driver’s licence or a certified translation of your own licence.
In Italy, you are allowed to drive if you are 18 years of age or over. One must drive on the right lane of the road and pass on the left. For all motor vehicles, headlights, parking lights and number plate lights must be turned on when driving on interurban roads and highways. In town one may choose whether or not to have their lights on with the exception of two-wheeled vehicles (mopeds and motorcycles), which must have their lights on at all times. Please avoid honking in the urban area if you are not in an emergency situation. Buses and trains have right of way. Front and back seat belts are compulsory and in the case of non-compliance, fines can be given to both driver and passengers. When driving on a road with two or more lanes, you must occupy the furthest lane to the right; the lanes on the left hand side are for overtaking. At a crossroad, if not otherwise indicated, you must give way to all cars coming from the right.

Insurance: In Italy you must have liability insurance. A “carta verde’ (green card) is recommended to all foreigners: This kind of car insurance can be purchased at the border and is valid for 15, 30 or 45 days.
